Audio Description at Carnival

Description:

For the first time in the history of Uruguayan carnival — one of the country's most important cultural events — a live audio description service was implemented. The City of Montevideo, through its Disability Office, commissioned Sintagma to develop this milestone in cultural accessibility.

During the qualifying rounds of the 2024 Official Competition, Sintagma provided live audio description for every show at the Teatro de Verano. The service was broadcast both inside the venue — through wireless headsets — and via TV Ciudad's digital signal, reaching more than 6,000 people. It was designed in collaboration with the National Union of the Blind of Uruguay and Comedia Nacional artists, who contributed their perspective during testing, validation, and implementation.

This project not only made the event accessible to people with visual disabilities and other groups, but also set a landmark precedent for Uruguayan carnival.

In 2025, the service was expanded to the Official Competition and the Winners' Round at the Teatro de Verano, adding performances at the Monte de la Francesa and Arbolito El Tejano neighborhood stages. For this edition, Sintagma designed and validated 42 audio description scripts covering every participating group, in dialogue with service users and with subsequent copyediting.

The service was delivered on site, with technical teams and booth operation, and headset distribution and return procedures were designed with accessible signage to ensure a smooth experience for the audience.
